Mona Vale Oral Surgery and Sedation

Wisdom teeth removal Mona ValeOne of the most common types of oral surgery that we provide is wisdom tooth removal. Depending on the case, having a wisdom tooth pulled can be similar to a routine extraction or a more complex surgical procedure. The situation varies from person to person and tooth to tooth.

What Does Surgery Entail?

A surgical wisdom tooth extraction involves a small incision made in the gums to expose the tooth. In some cases, a minimal amount of bone must also be removed to access the teeth involved. Depending on the situation, sectioning of the wisdom tooth into smaller pieces may be necessary to remove it. Afterwards, the extraction site is closed with self-dissolving sutures (most take at least a few days or weeks to completely dissolve).

Do You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Every wisdom tooth surgery begins with an initial consultation and X-rays to evaluate the size and positioning of the teeth. As we talk through the different circumstances regarding the teeth and if a surgical extraction is necessary, you’ll be appropriately informed about the specifics regarding your situation. Wisdom tooth removal is a unique process that is entirely different from one person to the next. We want you to know precisely what can be expected for your particular situation.

Since everyone’s experiences and expectations are different—including their comfort level inside of a dentist’s office—it’s best to come into the oral surgery experience with an open mind to discuss your concerns and expectations with our dental team. After your consultation, we will have a better understanding as to what your specific surgical situation is likely to entail, including possible risks to keep in mind.

Recovery After Oral Surgery

Wisdom teeth removal surgery can require a bit longer amount of time to recover than a typical extraction. It may take a week or two for discomfort and swelling to fully resolve. During your consultation we will discuss possible risks and factors to keep in mind so that you can be best prepared for the post-operative recovery process.

In most cases, we will prescribe a stronger medication for pain relief (and possibly an anti-inflammatory) than what is used with a routine dental extraction.

Sedation During Wisdom Tooth Extraction

While straightforward wisdom tooth extractions can be completed with local anaesthetic, most of our oral surgery cases are performed under intravenous (IV) sedation.

With IV sedation, we can comfortably remove all four wisdom teeth at the same time, allowing you to relax as much as possible as our experienced dentists work more efficiently. Approximately 90% of wisdom tooth removal surgeries performed in our office over the past 10 years have been completed under IV sedation. It’s more comfortable for our patients and a predictable way to care for you throughout the process.
