Will braces make my teeth hurt?

Some patients may apply the common exercise motto “No pain, no gain” to wearing braces. Yes, moving teeth can cause some discomfort; however, the worst discomfort is generally over in a few days and subsides totally within 5‐7 days.

Keeping Appointments Comfortable

What can come as a surprise to some patients is how comfortable their appointments are. You will
feel pressure, and only afterwards does this turn into discomfort. We always compare this to
strenuous exercise. For example, if you’ve been doing heavy lifting, you have a delayed onset pain
which is much worse the next day, when you wake up and can’t move your legs or arms!
Although most patients don’t take any medication for discomfort following their adjustment appointment, you are welcome to use whatever pain relief medication you normally take. Dental wax can also be used to shield your inner lips and cheeks from the metal brackets and wires of your braces.
You also may wish to “baby” your mouth by eating soft foods after each visit.

The Invisalign® Option

While traditional metal braces do an excellent job of straightening teeth, Invisalign clear aligners do as well. Not only are they discreet and practically invisible but they are comfortable to wear. The trays are smooth and worn for about 22 hours each day. You won’t experience mouth pain or gum irritation with Invisalign.
Whichever orthodontic option you choose, you can be confident that our highly skilled team will help you achieve the smile-enhancing results you desire with minimal discomfort. Contact us today to schedule an appointment!
