Mona Vale Soft Tissue Dental Therapy

Gum treatment Mona ValeSometimes it’s necessary for a dental provider or specialist to direct attention towards the soft tissues surrounding your teeth. When gingiva (gums) and the connecting skin between your teeth, lips and cheeks interfere with the function or aesthetics of your smile, a procedure such as a frenectomy or gingivectomy may be necessary.

What Is a Frenectomy?

Frenectomies are an especially common procedure for orthodontic patients. It involves removing the frenum—a strip of skin and muscle that connects the lip to the teeth at the middle of the mouth—when it’s too tight. Overactive frenums can cause teeth to push apart from one another, even after orthodontic therapy is completed (resulting in relapse). Tight frenums typically create gaps between the front teeth or cause the gums to pull back due to the tension involved.

During a frenectomy, we go in and remove the section of the skin or muscle that is pushing teeth apart. It’s a relatively uncomplicated procedure and only requires local anaesthetic due to the minimally invasive techniques involved. A few stitches are usually necessary, but recovery is relatively straightforward compared to other types of oral surgery. Most treatments are completed within 30-45 minutes.

What Is a Gingivectomy?

When excess gingiva (gum) tissue interfere with aesthetics or function of a person’s smile, it may be necessary to reshape or trim the gumlines back to expose a larger area of the affected teeth. Gingivectomies may be recommended in instances involving the following:

  • Short or “gummy” smiles
  • Excess tissue growth due to medication or hormonal changes
  • Unerupted or partially erupted teeth
  • Exposure and bonding
